Study: Pregnant women who stand long have low birth weight babies

Standing for long periods during a pregnancy may hamper the growth of the developing fetus, according to a new study published online in the journal Occupational and Environmental Medicine. Likewise, working more than 25 hours a week may subtly impact a fetus’ growth.

But the same study found no other adverse outcomes such as birth defects or preterm birth from working long hours, standing on your feet all day or doing physically demanding work.

Past research on the effects of a woman’s work on the health of her developing baby has been limited and many studies have looked at more serious outcomes rather than the subtler fetal growth. Physically demanding work, like heavy lifting, has been associated with these adverse outcomes in the past. Heavy physical work is thought to reduce the blood flow to the uterus and placenta, reducing the availability of oxygen and nutrients for the fetus.

But the authors of this study, from the Netherlands, wanted to examine associations between different work scenarios (standing, long hours and heavy lifting) on both fetal growth and adverse outcomes during different trimesters of pregnancy.

The study surveyed nearly 10,000 women from the Netherlands. The development of their babies was regularly measured throughout pregnancy, using ultrasound, and then at birth. Of the women surveyed, 39 percent said they stood for long periods of time at work—as teachers, child care workers, saleswomen and administrative employees.  About 46 percent said they were exposed to long periods of walking at work.

The study found no significant associations between physically demanding work or long working hours on adverse birth outcomes.

But during the third trimester of pregnancy, they found that long periods of standing were significantly associated with a 3 percent smaller head circumference in infants.  In addition, working more than 40 hours a week was associated with a smaller head circumference and lower fetal growth. Long working hours were associated with approximately a 5 to 7 ounce lower birth weight.

Bump Watch: Kourtney Kardashian and Scott Disick at the market

Kourtney Kardashian and beau Scott Disick were seen at Malibu Country Mart yesterday, June 27.

The two were reportedly undergoing couple's therapy and are expecting their second child, a daughter this summer.

“He’s grown so much over the years. I love seeing him as a dad — he’s great with Mason — and I’m not saying that we’re perfect,” she has said.

“We go to therapy, which helps us a lot. I think we’re always working to better ourselves, which I think a lot of people can do.

“I could go into the therapy session despising him, but by the time I leave — even if he’s not in there — I feel like I understand him so much more.”

Good for them!

Alyson Hannigan rejects Hollywood high post-delivery body standards for celebrity women

Kudos to Bellytich Bumpwatch alum, Alyson Hannigan, of ABC's  How I Met Your Mother for being an advocate of regular moms.

She recently tweeted

"I think by Hollywood standards I'm supposed to be in bikini shape now that my baby is 4 weeks old," she tweeted last Thursday. "My workout goal: Food drops in lap, not on belly."

After receiving well-wishes from fans, she continued "I still haven't lost all the weight from my first daughter. Oh well."

And reminded her followers, " It takes the uterus 6 weeks to shrink all the way back. You still have time. ;p” my uterus is also in my hips."

Good for her!!

Study: No need to wait 6 months after miscarriage to get pregnant

A miscarriage is the natural loss of a baby before the twentieth week of pregnancy. Experts say many pregnancies end before a woman even knows she was pregnant. Up to 20% of known pregnancies end in a miscarriage.
Miscarriages are generally caused by genetic problems with the baby that prevent it from developing. But whatever the cause, the loss of a pregnancy can be heartbreaking. And sometimes the advice that women receive after a miscarriage can also be heartbreaking.
Some women are told to wait before they try to get pregnant again. A 2005 report from the World Health Organization advised waiting at least six months. Some doctors advise women to wait even longer.
But a Scottish study published in 2010 found no need to delay. Researchers from the University of Aberdeen examined the medical records of thirty thousand women. The women visited Scottish hospitals between nineteen eighty-one and two thousand. They had miscarriages in their first known pregnancies and became pregnant again.
The study found that 85% of women who waited less than six months to get pregnant had live births. That compared to seventy-three percent of women who waited more than two years.
Those who quickly became pregnant again were less likely to have a dangerous pregnancy form in their fallopian tubes. They were less likely to lose their fetus after twenty weeks, known as a stillbirth. They were also less likely to give birth by caesarean section. And they had fewer preterm births and fewer babies with low birth weight.
The study found that about 40% of women became pregnant again within six months. Twenty-five percent got pregnant within six to twelve months.
The women who quickly became pregnant again after a miscarriage were more likely to be older. Older women might be less likely to delay because they know there are more risks with pregnancy the older they get.
The twenty-ten report appeared in the BMJ, the British Medical Journal.

Us Weekly reports that Anna Paquin and her husband Stephen Moyer are expecting twins in the fall.  You can too if you check out the Bellyitch Guide to Having Twins!  But perhaps it is inevitable. ...those currently pregnant with twins such as  Kayte Grammer who is currently expecting twins this summer with husband Kelsey Grammer..

And Actress Daya Vaidya who is expecting twin boys this July with husband Don Wallace....

So this above photo of Anna in April at the White House Correspondents' Association dinner in Washington, DC was a precursor of a future red carpet debut with an even fuller belly full of twins as we saw with....
