4 Facts about your baby bump

FitPregnancy made an attempt to address head on the obsession with the baby bump and explain to those who are sporting one for the first time or to the merely curious what's the fuss all about:

HIGHS AND LOWS Carrying high or low does say something about your abs, according to John Thoppil, M.D., an assistant clinical professor of OB-GYN at Texas A&M University College of Medicine. "When a woman carries high, her abdominal muscles are often in good shape, while lax muscles from age, previous pregnancies or decreased fitness can cause her to carry low," he says. Thoppil adds that taller women usually have narrower pregnant bellies while shorter women carry wider.
SOONER OR LATER? Most bellies don't reveal a pregnancy until the second trimester. Until then, the uterus is usually hidden behind the pubic bone. "When women look like they are showing earlier, it is often due to the bloating that accompanies early pregnancy," Thoppil says. You may also show earlier if you have been pregnant before or your ab muscles are lax.
WHAT'S MY LINE? The linea negra—the vertical dark line that runs up your belly—is caused by pregnancy hormones. It is usually more pronounced in women with darker skin. "It will almost certainly fade after pregnancy," says Thoppil. (Your new "outie" bellybutton will likely go back to normal, as well.) As for stretch marks, they're mostly genetic; avoiding excess weight gain might help prevent them, he says, but nothing else is known to work.
TOO BIG OR TOO LITTLE Starting at about 20 weeks, your doctor or midwife will measure your fundal weight, or distance from your pubic bone to the top of your uterus, at every prenatal visit. "It is a one-to-one correlation," Thoppil explains. "At 20 weeks, for instance, the measurement should be around 20 centimeters." If it deviates by 3 centimeters one way or the other, your care provider will most likely follow up with an ultrasound to see if the baby is too large or too small.

There you have it. Any questions?

10 Things dads want to do with their sons

All dads have things that they love to do, or dream about doing, with their sons. Even before a man ever becomes a father, he probably already envisions activities he looks forward to someday sharing with his boy. Here’s our list of ten things that dads dream of doing with their sons:

  1. Holding him for the first time. – The moment when fatherhood first takes hold in a tangible, yet inexplicable way. You now know what it means to be a father, to be responsible for another life, and you’re never the same from that moment on.
  2. Having a catch. – There’s scarcely a man in this country that didn’t at least get a little misty-eyed watching this scene from Field of Dreams. It is virtually every American man’s dream of father-and-son bonding.
  3. Going to a ballgame. – Of course, the next step after playing catch in the front yard is heading out to the ballpark to watch the pros do it. Hopefully, your next catch will be of a home run ball. Whatever the case, this is the American pastime.
  4. Teaching him to shave. - It’s a mundane chore for the average man, yes; but for a dad it’s a rite of passage. Showing your young whippersnapper the ropes with a razor and shave cream is pretty special, we have to admit.
  5. Going camping, fishing or hunting. – Let’s face it, for a lot of dads, having a son is like getting a license for a second childhood. You’ve got a built-in excuse to do all sorts of things, this time for your son’s sake too. All those activities you once enjoyed are yours to enjoy again.
  6. Attending his college graduation. – Few moments in a young man’s life hold as great a sense of promise and maturity than the day he goes from the campus out into the world. It brings with it a shared feeling of accomplishment for both father and son.
  7. Acting as his agent at the NFL Draft. – Any dad who’s ever had a son with even a modicum of athletic ability has toyed with this fantasy on occasion. For most, it’s more dream than reality: but it is what dreams are made of, isn’t it?
  8. Attending his wedding. – Naturally, a dad wants to see his son find a wife and lifelong companionship. It’s that next stage in the circle of life after all. Though dads aren’t quite as excited about doing this with their daughters…
  9. Sharing the family business. – For some dads, the day that their sons assume their role in the family business is a special one. It’s one of mortal man’s versions of immortality, as is the next example especially.
  10. Seeing his grandchildren. – Speaking of the circle of life, here it comes full-circle, with father and son becoming grand-father and father. A whole new generation begins, with whom to start the circle all over again.

Pregnant mannequins in prom dresses dispatched in anti-teen pregnancy campaign

A campaign to prevent teen pregnancy is targeting prom night. “Pregnant mannequins” are being set up at dress shops in an effort to send a message to teens.

The pregnant mannequins are part of United Way’s latest stunt to reduce teen pregnancy in Milwaukee. “We have to be aggressive in our approach. We have to give it to them straight. We have to be hard-hitting. We can’t put soft pieces out there. We can’t be touchy feely about this,” Nicole Angresano with United Way said.

Store owner Elliott Torrence agrees with the message. He’s put up the prom dress wearing pregnant mannequins at both of his stores. “We’re either part of the solution, or we’re part of the problem. They come in, they look around, and oftentimes, we don’t have a chance to speak with them one-on-one, but if they could leave with this message, and it makes a difference, then it’s worth it,” Torrence said.

United Way is half-way into a 10-year campaign to reduce teen pregnancies by 46 percent. So far, it seems their strategies are working. The latest data shows a drop of more than 30 percent since they began in 2006. “No other community has a goal that bold, and what we know is, we have to have equally bold tactics to reach that number,” Angresano said.

The pregnant mannequins may not be as in-your-face as a giant billboard, but Torrence hopes they subtly make the message stick. “If we can help one, it can make a difference,” Torrence said.

Did DWTS star Jaleel White hide girlfriend's pregnancy?

The ex of Dancing with the Stars star Jaleel White, formerly of the 90s show Family Matters, has come forward saying that White has attempted to maintain his single image by trying to hide her pregnancy a few years ago.  The couple have a 2-year old daughter, Samaya, who they co-parent, but Bridget Hardy says White wasn't too happy about the public knowing he is a dad.

According to BET.com:

Star Magazine is reporting courtesy of Radaronline.com that White tried to hide his ex Bridget Hardy’s expectancy in favor of keeping his sexy, single guy image.
“We were having a baby and starting a family and there’s lots of stress on a couple,” Hardy told Star Magazine. “We tried to work it out but he wasn’t ready for a committed relationship.”
The Dancing with the Stars contestant was so serious about keeping his pending family life secret that he banned Hardy from attending the King of Pop's funeral.
“Someone even invited us to go to Michael Jackson’s funeral and he didn’t take me because I was seven months pregnant," she says. "He still wanted to maintain that playboy image."
Allegedly, White sent Hardy confusing mixed messages about his desire to be a father by both trying to conceal their child and offering to pay Bridget off for full custody of their daughter.
“He texted me and offered me $200,000 to leave our daughter with him and have me go and start my own family,” says Hardy. “He basically tried to pay me off. I went home screaming and said, ‘We’re done.’”
Today, Hardy maintains that their co-parenting family life remains complicated. While she says White is a “good financial provider” to their two-year old daughter, Samaya and “loves her to death” she admits the ex-couple barely speak as they raise her together.

Interesting stuff, no?

10 bad eating habits parents teach their kids

Kids most often learn by example and I think we as parents tend to forget that fact as they get older. Once our kids are a little more self-reliant we usually go back to our habits as they were pre-children. As life picks up, moms go back to work when the kids start school, and everything gets busier, and it gets harder and harder to set a good example for our kids. Do you do any of the following bad habits in front of your kids?

  1. Salting your food before you taste it: This used to be a secret test that interviewers would use to size up a candidate for a job. Their reasoning? Salting your food before you taste it at a restaurant means that you have preconceived notions about how it will taste and this could trend over into other aspects of your personality. With children, using too much salt is a bad habit to get into because it’s not good for blood pressure and it makes your body retain water. Instead, try to use other spices to season your food, adding flavor without unnecessary sodium.
  2. Eating really fast: In our frenetic lives of running our children from activity to activity we often don’t have time to sit down as a family and enjoy our food. Eating too fast can lead to over eating because your body doesn’t realize that it’s full until after you’re done eating, and this can lead to weight gain. This is especially bad for our children because we are not teaching them to enjoy their food and listen to their body’s hunger cues. When they feel full they should stop eating.
  3. Skipping breakfast: We’ve all heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day so why do so many adults still skip it? Scientific studies have shown that people who eat breakfast weigh less than those that skip breakfast so why do so many women still skip breakfast to save calories? Kids especially need breakfast to fuel their bodies and brains for a long day at school. Unlike adults, they can’t – and shouldn’t – get up and go to the vending machine when they are hungry.
  4. Midnight snacking: This late night habit of grabbing a snack is terrible for your system. Odds are that you are going to go to bed very soon after eating and those calories are not going to get burned off, which will also lead to weight gain. Kids who are active burn up calories a lot faster than adults and might need a healthy snack before they go to bed, but it should be at least a half an hour before bedtime and definitely not at midnight.
  5. Eating while driving: Again, in our hectic lives we’re constantly running from one activity to another, whether with the same child or a different child or our own personal activities. We grab a bite through the drive-thru and inhale it while going down the road, and we are inadvertently teaching our kids the same as they eat their nuggets and watch us in the back seat. What we should be showing them is to drive undistracted and that it’s important to focus on our food and enjoy what we are eating. Mindless eating is what also another cause of people being overweight.
  6. Skipping vegetables: We always think of children as not liking vegetables, but there are plenty of adults who don’t like vegetables either and it’s very hard to get your kids to eat vegetables if you don’t. Kids learn by example, and when you skip veggies they will skip them too.
  7. Eating out a lot: See a reoccurring theme here? When we are busy there’s no time for preparing a home cooked meal. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that restaurant food has a lot more sodium and calories than a home cooked meal. Look into other options, such as making meals ahead of time on the weekends so you can just take them from the freezer and heat them up, or get out your slow cooker and use it for hectic weeknights. What’s nice about a slow cooker is that if you take a few minutes in the morning to prepare it and turn it on you can forget it until you get home. Also, if you eat in shifts everyone can eat hot food when they are ready to eat.

Trend: Women breaking 3-month rule & sharing pregnancy news on Facebook earlier

A growing number of women are sharing their pregnancies on Facebook and breaking the three month rule.  Traditionally, women wait to tell others about a preganncy until 12 weeks when the fetus is most likely to be viable.  Sharing too soon mean if she miscarries, she will have to repeatedly tell her friends and family who ask about the loss and have to relive the hurt and pain from that over and over again.  It happened to a dear friend of mine and after the miscarriage, I neither any of our friends have heard from her since.

USA Today did a story yesterday which said that women are sharing earlier on social media sites, bucking tradition and then using sites like Facebook for comfort. Here is an excerpt:

Even though miscarriages have often been considered a secret for couples to bear in silence, that taboo is breaking down. Even celebrities are sharing the news — and with more people. Earlier this year, rapper Jay-Z released a song sharing intimate details of a miscarriage with wife BeyoncĂ© Knowles, and since then, reality-star-turned-entrepreneur Bethenny Frankel (The Real Housewives of New York City) disclosed that she had suffered one as well.
"There is an abundance of change in American culture, and I've always been bothered why people don't tell their loved ones about their loss," says physician Roger Harms, chair of Obstetrics & Gynecology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. "Miscarriage is a terrible misnomer, suggesting that something happened. Guilt is built in with the words that we use."
Miscarriage is the spontaneous loss of a pregnancy before the 20th week. It's not as rare as some might think: 15% to 20% of known pregnancies end in miscarriage, says the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. The actual number may be even higher, because many occur so early that a woman may not even know yet that she's pregnant. Sometimes, even if fertilization is unsuccessful, placenta can begin to form, causing a false positive on tests.
...Women who miscarry also often feel an overwhelming sense of guilt, even though in most cases nothing they did or could have done would have prevented the loss, Zweifel says. "Even if they can figure out why it happened, and it's not attributed to their behavior, women still find a way to blame themselves as a way to somehow prevent a future loss."
But some women find that Facebook and other online forums provide an outlet for support. "It blessed me so much to know that so many people were with us as we went through this difficult situation," Webber says. "Over the weeks, months, and even year, people still send me encouragement through Facebook. It has really been a blessing."
For some, online forums about pregnancy loss are a better venue for discussing their grief than general sites such as Facebook. "It is much easier to talk with other women who have gone through a similar experience than an audience of people, some I haven't spoken to in years and many who do not know what it is like to lose a baby," says Kristin Johnson of Portland, Ore.

Bump Watch: Lisa Stelly & Jack Osbourne Baby Shower pics

Jack Osbourne and his fiance Lisa Stelly, seen above on a recent walk, are getting ready for baby.  Osbourne's family threw a shower for the couple back in February 13. Here are some photos from that event that Stelly tweeted:

“Me and my sugar pie honey bun at the shower,” Stelly tweeted.  She looks so lovely. The long loose flipped ringlets and that dress is uber cute! Usually folks get thrown showers when they are further along, but doing it this early gives a mom-to-be a chance to stand out and not be as big. Interesting option.

Stelly also shared a photo via twitter of herself, future sis-in-law, Kelly Osbourne, future mom-in-law Sharon Osbourne.  Love kelly's wrap dress and two tone Mary Jane heels.

Review: The Plush Pad by Ah Goo Baby

Babies deserve plush comfort too. That's exactly what they get when their caregivers place them down on The Plush Pad by Ah Goo Baby. The review product (retail $29.95) sent to Bellyitch is exquisite., I must say.

I'm a stickler for quality and durably created products.  The first thing I noticed about this very pretty changing pad was how soft the center pad was. It's made of all natural cotton and is very luxurious.  I worry about it being able to be cleaned easily because it is very white, but all  you need to do is remove the memory foam from inside and toss it in the wash, on the cold gentle cycle.  The plush pad  comes in all sorts of fashionable and stylish patterns and colors. It fits snug into a matching cloth case that has room for at least one diaper.

I also checked out the stitching which was well put together and looked solid. That's a good sign so you are assured that it will last through the months and withstand a few washings.

This pad is that nice upscale product you take to the play date, maybe baby and me gym or yoga class, or when visiting friends.  I would worry about using it for everyday use because it is white and overuse may cause it to wear a bit. But if you aren't concerned or have at least two to rotate, that would make it last longer.

I also checked out the diaper pouch (retail $12.00) which came in the same material and was also made with the same level of quality and detail as the pad. It has a water-resistant liner and looks roomy enough to fit 2 to 3 diapers in there. I prefer natural materials over synthetic so I would always go with a cloth pouch to a plastic one any day!

Check out the Ah Goo Baby store for more products and the site for where you can pick up one of its products if you so choose!

Apparently, a bunch of celebs own these: Jessica Alba, Naomi Watts, Rebecca Romjin, Toni Collette, Cate Blanchett, Nicole Kidman, Patrick Dempsey, Allison Sweeney, Samantha Harris, Jenna Elfman, Marcia Cross, Amanda Peet, Jason Priestly, Jamie Pressley, Elisabeth Hasselbeck and Kristy Swanson.
