More women are taking HCG to increase chances of getting pregnant

The Pregnancy Zone reports that women are now taking HCG injections to increase their chances of becoming pregnant.
HCG or Human Chorionic Gonadotropin hormone is naturally produced by the body. Its presence in the urine indicates the onset of pregnancy. This hormone is excreted through placenta in pregnant women.

HCG also helps maintain the corpus luteum-producing progesterone that is produced upon conception and increases incrementally to help a woman maintain her pregnancy in the early weeks.

But not many know that HCG is also effective in stimulating ovulation as well.

Some women are adding injections of these hormones in addition to other fertility drugs in hopes of finally becoming pregnant.

Recently, HCG has become a popular injection and oral pill taken by people world wide to lose weight, though late last year, the United States Food & Drug Administration announced it will start investigating the HCG market and the drug use for weight loss.

Alyson Hannigan was spotted with her family, including her daughter Satyana and hubby Alexis Denisof at the 3rd Street Promenade this weekend. Isn't that a cute sweater? 5 Spring Trends, Maternity Style

A Pea in the Pod spring maternity dress in a trendy bright orange

This spring, even if you are pregnant, you don't have to miss out on mixing and matching the latest trends and looks. Pregnant women tend to stay away from bright bold and electric colors that are in style this season. They fear that the vibrant hues may have them looking even larger than they may feel with their growing belly and other body parts. Understandable.  There are other looks that are hot in 2012 that a preggers chick can rock well: Polka Dots, Color Block, Florals, Cat Eye Glasses and Blue-Green jewelry.  Check out the slideshow below to see what's in and how you can work it, whilst pregnant.

Bump Watch: Alessandra Ambrosio Malibu family stroll

Pregnant Brazilian supermodel Alessandra Ambrosio was peeped hanging out with her family in Malibu, California on Monday afternoon, January 29.  Flanked by hubby Jamie Mazur and carrying her 3-year old Anja, she cruised the town in a pair of hawt skinny jeans, a fabulously wrapped Pashmina and a rocking grey shawl top. Nice and sensible suede ankle boots too! And the matching grey Kelly bag is a keeper! Indeed! Love the look and the family. *Gush*

20 Common Myths about Pregnancy

Forming a new human being is the most complicated thing a person can do without really having to think about it. But that doesn’t mean women don’t fret over it.

So three Californian OB/GYNs — tired of getting called at 3 a.m. by frantic pregnant women who had woken up to find themselves sleeping on their backs or who had eaten raw meat and wanted to get their stomachs pumped (yes, those are two real examples) — decided to write a book: The Mommy Docs Ultimate Guide to Pregnancy and Birth.

Drs. Yvonne Bohn, Allison Hill and Alane Park also host a TV show called “Deliver Me” on Discovery, and they’ve all gestated children — which gives them at least one advantage over Dr. Spock. We asked them to deconstruct the most common myths about pregnancy, some of which are propagated in extremely popular and well-regarded pregnancy books.

Myth #1: Cocoa butter prevents stretch marks. False. In fact using cocoa butter makes women’s skin more sensitive, and some women have allergic reactions to it. Dr. Park treated one woman who came in with bright pink circles on her breasts. She couldn’t figure out why, until the patient copped to using cocoa butter to try to keep her breasts perky.

Myth #2: You can’t fly during your first or last trimester. Nope. False again. You can fly whenever you want. Some airlines won’t let you on the plane in your last trimester, but that has more to do with fears that you’ll go into labor and force the plane to land or spoil the upholstery.

Myth #3: You can’t pet your cat during pregnancy. False. However, you shouldn’t change your cat’s litter box during pregnancy because of the risk of toxoplasmosis from the dookies. And also, because, dammit, you’re growing a human being, and do you have to everything?

Myth #5: You can’t eat sushi. False. Sushi is permissible except for mackerel, shark, tilefish and swordfish. And don’t eat too much tuna — no more than 12. oz (about two maki, or rolls) per week.

Myth #6: No hot dogs either? False. Hot dogs are also fine to eat, as long as they’re well-cooked.

Myth #7: Pregnant women should keep away from polished furniture. So false. Dr. Bohn once treated a woman who was nervous about sitting on her couch, because of the furniture polish fumes. Sheesh.

Myth #8: Dying your hair is harmful for Baby. Wrong again. False. (Damn, I fell for that one too.)

Bump Watch: Molly Sims bumps it up on the red carpet

Molly Sims shared this photo of herself looking radiant on the red carpet of the January 14th Art of Elysium  charity gala, writing on her blog that she wasn't sure she'd be able to pull off such a bright orange.

"But getting dressed up is already that much harder when you’ve got a little bun in the oven, so I decided to trust in the power of Marchesa (which you all know I do since they designed my wedding dress) and go for it!" she wrote. "I’d say it worked, wouldn’t you? I just adored the flowy fabric and draping, the beaded embroidery at the shoulders and the baby bump-accommodating empire waist."

I love the draping. On her website, Sims shows readers how to modify that feel, look and color in other styles. Nice that she's taking control of her pregnancy and melding her modeling and fashion know how with it.

New mom Viola Davis wins SAG Best Actress award

Viola Davis on the red carpet to Screen Actor's Guild Awards 2012

Congratulations to a Bellyitch Posh Mom Style Icon contender Viola Davis on her Best Actress in a leading role WIN last night at the Screen Actor's Guild awards for her role in last year's The Help. Davis and her husband recently adopted a child.

Her co-star Octavia Spencer won for best supporting actress which follows her win in that category of the Golden Globes.  The movie's entire cast won for best film ensemble which is the equivalent to Best Movie in the Academy Awards.

Octavia Spencer and Viola Davis in The
I feel I should go actually go watch  The Help now. I was so conflicted after learning that the women who Davis and Spencer portray did not give permission to author Kathryn Stockett to chronicle their lives in her best selling book then capitalize on their stories in a film; and over the fact the film played into the typical story of blacks being "rescued"; AND that the women were playing the roles as mammies, nannies and caregivers which was stereotypical and expected in early years of film, yet is still today one of limited acting opportunities for black actresses even in this millennium. *sigh*

So far many of the black women who have won top Academy Award honors have portrayed an abusive alcoholic dysfunctional mom (Mo'nique in Precious), an emotionally scarred and damaged woman who subjects herself to an animalistic sex scene with the character that executed her husband (Halle Berry in Monster's Ball); and a sassy, head-rolling, loud diva whose ego contributes to her downfall (Jennifer Hudson in Dreamgirls).

We're on a roll as far as winning BIG for playing not so positive characters. One day one may win playing a strong, mainly positive, empowering force in a gutsy and convincing biopic or something. Here's hoping!

But all that to say CONGRATULATIONS Viola and Octavia!!

Woman who delivered twins via two uterusses brings babies home

Photo: Journeyto2boys.wordpress.com

Last Monday, a New York woman who was born with two uteruses and who carried a baby in each, was allowed to bring home both her boys, born last October.

Buffalo, NY's Women and Children's Center had discharged baby Carter to mom Alison Camp on January 21, while his brother Griffin remained in the hospital.

After a slightly longer stay, Griffin was finally able to go home with the rest of the family last week, as  Camp documented on her blog, Journeyto2boys

"To drive away from the hospital with the knowledge that we made it through was so  powerful, and beyond an answered prayer," Camp wrote in recent journal entry about bringing the boys  home.

Mom had a rare condition called didelphys. Each of her uteruses  had one fallopian tube and one ovary and she had two cervixes.

Even though the boys were born on the same day, doctors say it is possible they could have been conceived at different times. The jury is still out on whether the boys can technically be called twins.

At birth, the premature boys weight about 1.5 pounds each. The twins join their 5 and 2-year old older sisters.

Starting the baby with solid food

One day it will happen: your baby will reach for your spoon, launching whatever you were attempting to eat across the room or painting it all across your face. If this sounds familiar, your baby may be ready to take the big step of starting solid foods.

When a baby starts solid foods, it’s a momentous occasion worthy of documentation with a camera or with a video of those first tastes and first reactions. But taking that next step can also be bittersweet. It is often the first big signal that your baby is turning into an independent person.

However, while this is often more exciting for parents than it is for babies, you should not rush to introduce solids to your baby. While both the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the World Health Organizations say breast milk is an adequate source of nutrition until 6 months, they also agree that introduction of solids any time between 4 and 6 months is appropriate. Don’t introduce solids under 4 months unless specifically instructed to by your doctor. A 2011 articlepublished in Pediatrics showed a six-fold increase in obesity by age 3 in formula fed babies introduced to solids prior to 4 months of age. Both organizations go on to specify that if you wait past 6 months, an infant may not receive enough nutrition and could experience growth and developmental delays

Bump Watch: Jennifer Garner and Saraphina on a stroll

Jennifer Garner ventures out with Saraphina in a relaxed stroll to Starbucks in Santa Monica, California, yesterday January 27. Loving that long comfy sweater and relaxed third trimester style, but thinking she maybe shouldn't be lifting a 3 year old who could walk perfectly fine while she is this far along in her pregnancy. She puts her down later, but just sayin'

How to make post-partum visit with mom-in-law go smoothly

As a brand-new mom, you could use some help around the house for a week or two. As brandnew grandmas, your mother and mother-inlaw can’t wait for a chance to come for a visit. It seems like a match made in Heaven, but is it?

Pairing their high expectations with your postpartum exhaustion and newmom insecurities could have its perils. Some pre-planning, plus a few discussions about what you can and can’t expect, could help keep hurt feelings at bay and make this time spent with mom or mom-in-law one of joy rather than extra stress.

A Timely Arrival

If mother or mother-in-law is traveling to visit you, a key consideration is timing. You and your partner should agree on whether you want her to be there for the birth, in the first days after, or later when you’ve had a chance to catch your breath. The hospital and early days at home are overwhelming, and the last thing you need is to have a mother or mother-in-law around who feels like a guest that you have to host. If your mother or mother-in-law lives in town, you and your partner can  decide whether you want her to stay with you or just visit at scheduled times.

Study suggests pregnancy should be considered a disability

A recent study by a University of Dayton law professor, Jeannette Cox, asserts that pregnant women should be covered by the Americans with Disabilities Act, to protect them from being fired or forced to perform labor that could be harmful to mother or child. (The paper is forthcoming in March in  the Boston College Law Review.)

The American Disabilities Act (ADA) doesn’t recognize pregnancy as a disability, leaving pregnant women physically and financially vulnerable on the job, concluded Cox, who studies employment discrimination. She found that pregnant women are at risk for losing their jobs when “reasonable adjustments” aren’t made, such as retail workers fired for drinking water at work or pregnant police officers forced to perform rigorous assignments (while injured officers were given lighter duty).

Cox argues that the ADA currently covers people with “minor temporary physical limitations comparable to pregnancy’s physical effects.” Under current ADA protections, disabled workers may forgo tasks involving heavy lifting, repetitive bending, reaching, prolonged sitting or standing or working under high-temperature conditions. Not so for pregnant women.

The women most affected are low-income workers who are more likely to work in physically demanding jobs than higher-paid desk jockeys, Cox found. Lower-income workers often face the dilemma of continuing to work in high-risk jobs or leaving work altogether, forgoing income.

Bump Watch: Molly Sims gets pampered in Beverly Hills

Molly Sims headed to the salon for some pampering earlier this week, (January 24) in Beverly Hills. The model, television host and actress is expecting her first child this year with hubby Scott Stuber.

Sims recently updated her website with a baby theme and in a recent entry blogged about pregnancy cravings and her first trimester.

"I’m officially 17 weeks along as of this past Monday, and one thing is for sure: No experience I’ve ever had compares to this little bun in the oven!, " she wrote. "I’ve already been though the morning sickness (every morning from 4 to 6 AM for seven weeks—it was the worst), the strange cravings (I’m looking at you, Kraft Easy Mac) and daily episodes of what I call 'pregnancy brain.' But believe it or not, I’m cherishing every moment."

She has a baby-theme photo album on her site that only registered users to her site can see. Clever marketing there! ha!

Eco Friday: 7 Natural Cures for Morning Sickness

EcoChildsPlay presented a great summary of some natural remedies and solutions for pregnant women who may not want to take prescription medicines to control vomiting, nausea and other symptoms of early pregnancy. Here are are a few standouts:

Ginger  -is well-known for its nausea reducing qualities, and many women have had success with ginger tea for relieving their morning sickness. I love the crystallized packets that are made in Asian countries and sold in international food stores because they are pungent and already sweetened.

Peppermint - You can drink it in the tea or take it in tablet of sugar-free candy form.

Fennel seeds - These natural seeds, sold in healthfood stores, are great for easing queasiness. Just shake a few in your hand and chew. You can also add a few dashes to your tea.

Slippery Elm - You can take this natural herb, sold at health food stores, to calm your tummy.

Almonds  - Eating a few of these at a time has been known to ease morning sickness. Almonds give you protein and are also one of the Superfoods. They've been linked to diabetes, cholesterol and inflammation control.

Papaya -This fruit can help you deal with nausea.

Pineapple - The tartnesss of this fruit may assist in dealing with morning sickness, but be careful the acidity in this fruit could have an averse affect with the food already in your tummy.
