Win a personalized skin set from Jessica Simpson's line Beauty Mint

As a woman who loves trips to the day spa and loves to pamper herself, I was excited about sampling Jessica Simpson’s new personalized skin care line that she launched last month with noted skin care expert Nerida Joy. The line features cleansers, a replenishing serum, under eye treatments and a variety of other scrubs and balms for the skin.

The complimentary review samples I received included the Essential Cleanser with aloe, a daily cleanser, and the Ultra Replenishing Serum to be used to rejuvenate and hydrate the skin and keep it smooth and ageless.

The cleanser was clear and smooth to touch, which is an essential quality in any good cleanser. It left my face feeling very clean  and refreshed after each wash and I suspect it must have been the tingling mint added to it. I applied the Ultra Replenishing Serum at night and in the day wore it under my make up as a moisturizer. I loved both products because they weren’t too greasy and were made with natural ingredients that were not too harsh on my skin.  They also complemented well with other brand’s items in my beauty skin care regimen.

Though I didn’t do this but, what usually happens is users who go to www.BeautyMint.com, take a quiz developed by a group of skin-care experts including Nerida Joy to determine what product would be best for them based on their personal skin care type.  They then get a personalized itemization when done.

The products are sold in sets of 4 or 5. The set of 4 costs $39.99 and the 5-piece set is $49.99. That is a very reasonable price point for the quality product and compares to other lines on the market sold in department stores or day spas. When my sample is finished, I would definitely re-order for a complete set.

One Bellyitch reader will get the benefit of sampling a set for FREE. Simply fill out the form below between today and December 15.  Anyone can enter so long as s/he has a US address to have the product shipped to in case his/her entry is randomly selected by Random.org’s integer selector as the winning entry.

Posh Mom Style Icon: Michelle Obama

It has been six months since we presented a Pop Mom Style Icon but just flipping through recent photos online, we've come to a concensus and have wondered why this woman wasn't on there before!

Joining  past Bellyitch Posh Mom Style icons, Christina Milian Jada Pinkett SmithJennifer LopezKelly RipaVictoria Beckham, and Tichina Arnold is the first lady of fashion and oh yeah, the First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama.

From the moment her husband announced his candidacy for presidency back in 2007, the fashion world has had their eye on Mrs. O. She has enjoyed a higher than average approval rating than her husband of late and is a much loved figure, generally, in the United States and the world.  She stunned the fashion world when she opted to wear a lesser known designer during her husband's inauguration in 2008 and  has been known to wear labels and brands that are accessible to the average woman including J Crew, White House|Black Market and Gap.

This mom of two daughters 10-year old Sasha and 13-year old Malia is known for being fit, spearheading a national campaign to get children to eat healthier and exercise and sporting her strong toned arms at every chance she gets.

She likes new, up and coming, and lesser known designers, but will certainly wear pieces from the fashion industry's institutional name brands like Ralph Lauren, Yves Saint Laurent, Versace and others.

Check out my favorite looks of  Mrs. O from over the years in these photos that are available compliments of The White House.

Heading to Brazil with the girls on an official trip.

Baby toy guide: Buying for baby, birth to 1 year

As a parent, one thing you expect will be a part of your life for the next decade or two, are toys, lots and lots of toys.  But what isn’t always as apparent is what toys to buy for your child. Which ones are just all hype, and which ones are crucial to aid in development? Everyone remembers the blocks and the xylophone you had as kids, but are they as good as toys that create the music themselves?  And more importantly, how do you know what toys are appropriate for your baby?

Whether you are shopping for a holiday, a first birthday, or just trying to give your baby new toys to match her growing set of skills, these are the types of toys to look for.

Rattles
Rattles are some of the first toys that babies will interact with, first by watching as you shake them, then by trying to pick them up and shake them on their own.  The sound stimulates newborns, and when babies can hold it themselves, rattles help teach them cause and effect.  Once baby has more motor control over her hands and can start playing with more complex objects, rattles will lose their appeal, but between 4 and 6 months rattles will find their ways into little hands and little mouths. So, look for rattles that are made without any small pieces that could break off or could act as a choking hazard.

Mirrors
Babies love to look at other babies and themselves.  Many a mother has gotten stuck in the bathroom at the mirrors when they’ve taken their infant into change a diaper.  While you have mirrors at your house, this is one place where you want to invest in a specific baby safe mirror rather than pulling out the old hand mirror tucked away in your vanity.  Most mirrors are made of glass, which can easily break.

Whatever  you decide on, save with these Kmart coupons

Bump Watch: Hilary Duff dining in gold

Hilary Duff dazzled in gold when she and husband Mike Comrie headed out to West Hollywood for dinner at Mercato di Vetro.  Love the top but the bag is too rugged, bulky and cumbersome for that light, feminine dinner date top. That's right. Get in all the date nights you can now, because after baby comes it will be a wrap for a while. oy!

Crave maternity launches evening dress rental service

UK stars Amanda Holden, Katie Price, Charlotte Church, Una Healy and Myleene Klass have all been seen cavorting in Crave maternity dresses, as has America's own Hilary Duff.

The British label recently launched a designer evening dress rental service for the average mom-to-be who has a fabulous, elegant and upscale event to attend while pregnant but doesn’t want to break the bank investing in one piece she'll probably wear one time during her pregnancy.

For £50-£150 ($78-$250), pregnant moms can rent one of six silk Crave dresses: a Maxi Dress in Black, Cream or Purple; a Raspberry embellished one shoulder maxi dress, a black embellished cocktail dress or my favorite a purple bandeau (strapless) evening dress.

They come in sensible girl sizes from 8 to 18. Dress renters pay a deposit fee and a 50% rental fee.  They can wear the dress all night or for up to 14 days. No need to dry clean the dress when they're done Crave does that for them and returns the deposit.

More designer labels  should consider this option. It's a wonderful business model.

Check out CRAVE’s Rental Collection for more details.

10 Reasons to Exercise While Pregnant

Hilary Duff has been spotted many times during her pregnancy coming from & going to Pilates classes.

Healthism lists 10 reasons to exercise while pregnant:

  • Helps decrease fatigue, even in the first trimester. This is also true of insomnia.
  • Can help women have a shorter labor. This is particularly true if you use movement in labor by changing positions.
  • Has been shown to help women lose pregnancy weight faster.
  • Helps with endurance during pregnancy and labor. We know labor is a marathon - so train for it!
  • Decreases aches and pains associated with pregnancy.
  • Can help reduce likelihood of tearing or severe trauma from episiotomy.
  • Can reduce the number of cesareans that are necessary.
  • It's fun and feels great!
  • Leads to a faster postpartum recovery. Add breastfeeding to kick start the weight loss of postpartum.
  • It's a habit that once started will lead to a lifetime of good fitness.
Not sure about the cesareans and episiotomy parts of this list, but everything else, I'd co-sign with!

Eleven year old girl gives birth in The Philippines

An 11-year-old girl has given birth to a baby boy in the central Philippines after a pregnancy of seven months, the government confirmed on Monday. It is the youngest known girl to have given birth in the region in recent years.

The Philippine government said the young girl was brought to a provincial hospital in Roxas City, located in Capiz province, on Saturday but was later transferred to a hospital in Iloilo province where she gave birth on Sunday.

Few details about the case were released by the government, which said the girl had been taken to a hospital in a critical condition but gave birth normally. Officials said the baby boy was born premature after a short pregnancy of just seven months.

It was not immediately known who is the father.

Earlier this month, a 10-year-old girl gave birth to a baby boy at a hospital in the city of Puebla in east-central Mexico. The baby boy weighed about 1.5 kilograms (3.3 pounds) at the time of his birth and was in a good condition despite his premature birth after a pregnancy of nearly eight months.

And in August 2010, a 10-year-old girl gave birth to a baby boy at the Cotabato Regional Medical Center in Cotabato City, which is located on Mindanao island in the Philippines. Her 27-year-old father was later charged with incest after he admitted to having repeatedly raped his daughter.

NY man says ex stole his sperm to make twins; Sues fertility clinic

Joseph Pressil says his ex stashed away his sperm & used it to get pregnant without his consent

A Long Island, New York man sued a fertility clinic for impregnating his girlfriend of 6 months with twins using sperm he says she stole from him, the New York Post reports.

Lawyers for the woman, Anetria Burnett, says her ex Joseph Pressil is being disingenuous in his claims.  They say in their response that the couple were trying to get pregnant the "natural" way but failed and that he injected her with hormone shots to simulate her ovulation.  Pressil says he always used condoms with this stripper ex and was surprised to learn of her pregnancy.  He said he only paid child support for the now 4-year old kids after DNA tests proved the babies were his.

Burnett's lawyars say Pressil's claims against the clinic are a scam to avoid child support payments.

What a big mess. Who do you think is telling the truth?

Celebrity 'Push' Present v. The Average Joe's labor & delivery gift to his partner

Men thinking of getting their wives a "Push Gift" for Christmas this year cannot go wrong with jewelry since it is the traditional thing to get.  But if you are looking for gifts to her to compensate her for all the challenges that can come with pregnancy and the labor and the delivery, there's not enough jewelry in the world that can compensate.

Since a Push present is not as simple as a birthday gift
where a spa gift certificate, a nice watch or flowers direct delivered to her door may do, moms-to-be expect a little bit originality in push gifts.

A bracelet with the name of the baby, mom-to-be, your name or family name may be a nice touch.  Sarah Jessica Parker
reportedly got a $6,000 charm bracelet from Mathew Broderick as a push gift.

Similarly, a necklace with a pendant of a pregnant mom or a mom with members of the family on it
could work. Nick Cannon reportedly gave Mariah Carey on the birth of twins Moroccan and Monroe a $12,000 ornate pendant just like that as a Push gift, reportedly.

If you have loads of cash and want to get fancy with it, diamond studs with the initials of the baby lasered within them would be an amazing, albeit flamboyant and insanely expensive, push gift.

Rumor has it Marc Anthony gave J. Lo a $300,000 canary diamond ring and a $2.5 million set of earrings, custom-made with diamonds imported from South Africa and engraved with the initials of the couple’s twins, Max and Emme after their birth.

Not everyone can afford the $73,000 Cartier Trinity ring that Keith Urban gave Nicole Kidman upon the birth of their first baby or the $220,000 custom-designed diamond cross he gave her upon the birth of their surrogate baby Faith.

For the average Joe, a nice bracelet, an awesome pair of earrings in mom's or baby's birthstone or a cute charm necklace in a modest, but slightly pricey, price range may do. You don't have to go overboard though many do.

It is after all, another invention of the jewelry industry to bilk new dads out of some cash and one that has gotten great returns as these days more and more first time moms are expecting "push" presents from their spouses.

I can tell you that some women who've had C-sections dislike the name becuase they did not "push" anything out.  Similarly, some feminists are outraged by the concept of the "push" present because to them, the whole traditions sets women back to the days where they are courted and presented with gifts by men, and limits the value of women to her role as child bearer.

Good thing I'm not a feminist because I see nothing wrong with one partner giving the next a symbolic gift and warm gesture of love and appreciation for the challenging and laborious process of carrying a child for 40 weeks. Live and let live!

Hospital aborts healthy twin fetus on accident

And sad news this week from the land down under:
An Australian hospital was investigating Thursday after a woman carrying 32-week-old twins had the wrong fetus terminated in a botched procedure it called "a terrible tragedy."

Doctors had advised the woman that one of the boys, whom she had already named, had a congenital heart defect that would require years of operations, if he survived at all, the Herald Sun reported.

She made the heartbreaking decision to abort the child, but the wrong baby was terminated on Tuesday.   The woman then endured a lengthy caesarean section at the Royal Women's Hospital in Melbourne during which the life of the sick fetus was also ended.

"The Royal Women's Hospital can confirm a distressing clinical accident occurred on Tuesday," the hospital said in a statement.   "This is a terrible tragedy and the hospital is deeply sorry for the loss suffered by the patient and her family.   "We are conducting a full investigation and continue to offer the family and affected staff every support."

Two independent investigators from The Canberra Hospital will help conduct a Root Cause Analysis for the health department, the hospital added.   A friend of the woman told the newspaper the family was struggling to cope.   "She went to the hospital with two babies and now she has none. And she had the heartache of giving birth to her sick baby. She's traumatized," she said.

The family later issued a statement requesting privacy.   "We appreciate the public interest in what has happened but we would have preferred the Herald Sun journalist involved in breaking the news of our tragedy had respected our request that he not run this story," they said.   Continue reading.

So sad and tragic and I'm not sure if Australia has ambulance chasers as we do here in America, but if they do, I'm sure they are all over this case because no matter what this is a clear, open and shut case of negligence. Our thoughts go out to that woman.

Bump Watch: Huma Abedin Black Friday shopping

Hillary Clinton senior aide, Huma Abedin, was spotted shopping with her husband ex-Congressman Anthony Weiner on Friday. She went with the all black with a scarf accent and sensible cowboy boots look. "Like". Other sites are poking fun of Weiner's mustache which some are comparing to that of a famous porno actor. Others ask whether the interesting shaped stache had anything to do with the Movember campaign where men were asked to grow mustaches to raise awareness for Prostrate Cancer and other cancers that affect men.

As usual, Huma is checking out her Blackberry while Anthony carries the bag and looks like a tag-a-long. I'm not hating because I've been accused on more than one occasion of looking just like this whilst my hubby is near.

Beyonce responds to critics saying her bump is fake in this VIDEO

Back in September when Beyonce was shooting the video for Countdown, she shot an outtake where she holds up a Daily News tabloid story with her on the cover and says how she is 6 months pregnant on September 23 but is pretending that her stomach is flat in the bodysuits that she wears in that video.

It looks like it could be a swipe back on the rumors that she actually has a flat stomach but is wearing a body suit to appear pregnant. The clip did not make the final video reel because her team has apparently gone with the decision to not justify the ridiculousness of the conspiracy theories and claims by justifying them with a response.

However, the outtake was leaked recently and as you can see from the short clip, Bey seems to have a pleasant sense of humor about it all.  It also undermines her claims in recent interviews that she doesn't pay any attention to the rumor mill. It's pretty hard to ignore when allegations of a fake bump has eclipsed much of the news about the pregnancy.

It's a fun clip. "Oh Baby!" LOL!

Namibia teen pregnancy skyrockets; check out the reasons why

One of Africa's most developed nation has seen a sharp spike in the number of teen pregnancies lately upwards to 34%, according to the latest polls, AllAfrica.com reported.  But what was most interesting to me in this article was the reasons why there has been a big rise:

Talk has it that the region is also susceptible to teenage marriages, a tendency of school-going children wandering at shebeens and nightclubs, teenagers exposed to pornography, girls having sexual relations with teachers for high marks, sexual intercourse between learners, and girls having sexual relationships with sugar daddies in exchange for cash and cellphones.

Oy vey! Sex with businessmen for cellphones? *sigh*

Stop helicoptering kids, one mom demands

Blogger Maureen Turner of the Canadian mom-site YummyYummyClub blogs about a recent decision by a Toronto school to ban balls from kids at recess and how we are over-helicoptering our kids and not letting them just enjoy being kids. Here is an excerpt:

Okay, it’s time to stop with all the coddling, and hovering, and helicoptering. Give your kids some space! Let them be kids.

We are stealing their childhood.

Sure there need to be rules. Don’t talk to strangers, look both ways before you cross the street, don’t hit your sister, don’t hit your brother... I don’t care if he hit you first, don’t throw balls in the house, and don’t play with balls on the playground... what?

That’s right, a school in Toronto has banned kids playing with balls... outside! I don’t know about you, but when my kids throw the ball in the house, I tell them to go outside. Now they can’t play with balls outside? What is this world coming to?

Remember when kids roamed the streets, knocked on each other's doors to come out and play, and stayed out till the street lights came on? Play dates with chaperones have taken over, and it makes me sad.

Lily Allen delivers a healthy baby girl!

What excellent news! Congratulations are in order for Brit pop singer/crossover hook-maker success Lily Allen for giving birth to a healthy full term baby girl on Friday!

This is wonderful to hear after Allen suffered through the delivery of a still born baby  with her ex, musician Ed Simon of The Chemical Brothers at 4-months pregnant in 2008 and then went through a second tragic still born birth loss at 6-months pregnant in 2010 with current husband Sam Cooper's child.

How brave and strong of her to be able to continue on with those sad losses and memories I'm sure still always on her mind. Very strong indeed.

Congrats to the new family and baby girl who has two angel siblings watching over her.

10 Questions you cannot ask your nanny during an interview

Nannyjobs.org did a post listing 10 questions you cannot ask a potential nanny during an interview. Here are the top 6:

1. Do you have diabetes, hepatitis or any other disease? You cannot ask questions regarding an applicant’s health or health history, period. You can ask if there is anything that will limit their ability to perform the duties of the job.

2. Have you ever been married or divorced? Marital status is another item you cannot inquire into.

3. What is the nationality of your family? Any question that relates to race or ancestry can be considered discriminatory. Simply asking the ethnicity related to their last name would fit into this category.

4. Have you ever filed a work comp claim? That’s right. You cannot ask them this question. You also cannot ask them how much work they missed due to illness in their previous jobs. This information is not considered appropriate for making a hiring decision.

5. Are you a heterosexual? Sexual orientation or sexual preference questions are also not allowed, as discrimination on this basis is considered illegal.

6. Where do you go to church? Religious affiliation or beliefs are not to taken into consideration. However, you can identify your own religious affiliations and beliefs. In doing so, you could ask them if they would have any conflicts with working for a family which holds these beliefs.
