Bump Watch: Mel B out to dinner with husband

Mel B was spotted heading out to dinner in Los Angeles, California with her husband Stephen Bellafonte last night. Again, nothing like a nice pregnancy to catapult a fading star back into the limelight and the cameras of the paparazzi for a brief 7 to 9 months. The bump is pretty out there. I want to pull her hair into a pony tail and throw a shall around the tats.

I think it may be time to put together a book on how to be fabulous while pregnant. Yes, Mel boo, you are inspiring me to pen a self-help book.

The FDA to allow cheaper preterm baby drug

The Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday disputed a drug company’s claim that pharmacies can no longer produce less expensive versions of a drug long used to reduce the risk that women will give birth prematurely.

The statement was aimed at defusing an intense controversy that erupted after the agency approved the drug Makena to prevent preterm births. Makena’s owner, KV Pharmaceutical of St. Louis, is charging $1,500 a dose for the drug. The same compound had been available for years for about $10 to $20 a dose.

The statement came a day after The Washington Post reported the intense criticism that has arisen over Makena. After word of Makena’s price began to spread, Internet sites for pregnant women became filled with angry commentary.

Some created Facebook pages lambasting KV. The high price also drew harsh criticism from several members of Congress, as well as the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine.

But in a statement Wednesday, the FDA said it would not exercise its authority to prevent pharmacies from producing “compounded” versions of the drug unless evidence emerged that patient safety was at risk.

Bump Watch: Natalie Portman running errands in NY

Amidst dodging accusations from her body double, American Ballet Theater soloist Sarah Lane, that Natalie Portman only danced 5% of the time in her Best Actress Oscar winning in The Black Swan, Portman kept warm while running errands in New York, wearing an   Isabella Oliver Maternity Woollen Trench ($429). The trench coat comes in Camel too.

Since Lane first lodged the claim, the movie's director, co-star Mila Kunis and its choreographer, Portman's fiance, Benjamin Milleppied have all come to Portman's defense saying the accusation is untrue.

BlackCelebKids.com, a website that follows, chronicles and provides news, photos and information about the children of celebrities of color, has a gallery of the black celebrity women that are due this year. The site was started, among other reasons, to fill a void that is missing in other celebrity parenting sites which rarely showcase children of celebrities of color. Check it out HERE.

Skype helps military dads connect with pregnant wives

Soldier connects with wife and newborn via Skype. source

I just signed up for my Skype account because I have to communicate with a partner overseas. Got me to thinking that this free service is a wonderful way for grandparents and military dads to connect with their pregnant family member who is located over seas or a very long distance away. There are several articles about Skype being used for that purpose.

The entire sign up process took a few minutes and since most laptops come equipped with webcams, the process is very easy.

Certainly, this concept is not new and I'm sure many families have been Skyping to stay connected for years now, but it was new to me and I thought I'd share. (And how about Skype has turned into a verb just as the word "Google" ha?s)

I cannot be the last one on earth to think about Skype being used this way. Please somebody, anybody, tell me I'm not alone. LOL!

Study: Weight Lifting okay during pregnancy

A new study has claimed that supervised moderate exercise and workout during pregnancy can work wonders. Earlier it was believed that work-outs or weight lifting during pregnancy have side effects but researchers say that moderate weight-lifting and exercise help in having a safe and normal delivery.

Weight training leads to the production of the relaxin hormone which makes the connective tissue more lax and prepares the body to give birth. Researchers recommend only low to moderate work-outs and exercises because increased quantity of relaxin in the body can cause injury.

Parenting Sucks!

Clinical Psychologist, Dr. Tammy Haynes-Robinson, takes on a recent study and TIME
magazine article discussing the negative side of parenting.

by Dr. Tammy Haynes-Robinson
Parenting Sucks! Or at least that’s what a recent study on parents' views of parenting says. The study by Richard Eibach and Steven Mock, psychologists at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada, says that parents now hate parenting more and more.  Furthermore, the study says,  parents have to delude themselves into their “happy place” in order to keep themselves from leaving their child at the nearest bus stop. The study goes on to say that we parents have more emotional distress, more depression, more financial strain and other drudgery that make our lives disastrous, in comparison to people who do not have children.
According to a TIME magazine article on this report we inflate the benefits of children in order to off-set the reality of children.
The insinuation is we have to do this in order to remain sane…or about as sane as you get being parents, which, if you read into the article, isn’t a sane at all. A Delusion in clinical terms is a fixed false belief appearing real. Ladies and Gents, we are officially in “LA LA Land” if you believe the hype.
Who’s side are you on anyway?
I recently had a conversation about parenting with a friend who is married and committed to not having children despite their intact ability to do so. They have no desire to procreate whatsoever and could find no reasonable argument for it. I have to admit that I launched into the joys of parenthood only to come around to the not so hot part. Long story short, I ended up musing on the joys of no children in terms of the other things I would be doing with my hard earned cashola.
The reason? Children are expensive in more ways than one but then again so is life. Opportunity cost may be high but it's the quality of the reward that you have to look at. Also human beings love, love, love the grass on the other side of the fence. We do! I remember being single and wishing to be in a relationship, I also remember the other way around. So as parents, it is normal for us to fantasize about what a great life we would have had or glorify our present existence as a coping mechanism.
Super-parent or Super pain in the Butt?
Parenting is hard especially if you have unreasonably high expectations of yourself and your children. That said I also think the western world is in the middle of a “me” phase now, where if you arent doing you, then life is stressful and anything other than doing you is not worth it. Lets face it raising children is a responsibility that can be joyous but not all the time, it can be fun but not all the time and it can be hard, but not all the time. Pretty much like anything else in life.
I enjoy watching my two human beings develop but, I also put time in for breaks and doing me. Its about balance once again, most importantly, balance in parenting.
I suppose being a helicopter mom or dad is incredibly stressful, but I don’t think that parenting needs to be as competitive or high strung as that. Our children would benefit far more of we learnt to chill out and let them learn some of their life lessons from experience. These experiences are imperative in their growth as  independent, confident beings who are masters of their own mind.
In fact the more you understand and appreciate your children for who they are , the more likely its is you can actually learn to like them as people. This one thing would cut out a lot of the distress that can make a parent hate parenting.
As Khalil Gibran said, “Your children come through you but they are not of you”
Money makes the world go ’round-or does it?
The TIME article boiled down the decision to parent as a fiscally unwise move, akin to throwing good money after bad, or fixing an old car up despite the fact that it wont start. Sure, Children are expensive, no doubt, but good money after bad? I beg to differ
Money is not the purpose of children so likening children to investments is comparing apples to oranges. In my opinion, Children give you an extremely valuable opportunity to grow and to love outside of any boundary you now exist in. Even more than the relationship with the “love” of your life...
What’s the takeaway?
We may be crazy, but parenting relies on quality of relationship and love. If we react badly to parenting it means we need to adjust our expectations and plan for our decision to parent as best we can. Finally, let go and learn to like your off-spring for who they are and trust that you are doing the best you can by letting them explore and learn about this world.
Note well: the study was conducted on parents of young children. As a mother of a 6 and 8 year old I am here to say.. it does get better! They make their own food now (Cheesy balls do not count!) and can hold a lengthy discussion on all manner of lively topics.

The Baby Bullet Babyfood Blender

I just noticed the infomercial for the baby bullet which is a version of the Magic Bullet blender that has been around for ages. (I know I am LATE on this discovery) You are supposed to be able to make natural organic baby food with it. The makers also give away a steamer with it that you are supposed to be able to use to steam veggies and sterilize pacifiers, nipples, breast pump accessories and teething toys and rings.

I have a few friends who have gotten it and says its great and others say, the original version of the bullet is better. It seems to be a quick and efficient way to make your own baby food. I made my own organic baby food using a normal blender, ice cube trays with my first child only and for a limited time because the process is very time consuming.

What are people's thoughts? Does it work? Is it work the $85 price tag? You sure to get a lot of stuff, albeit plastic non durable parts, but it still looks like a great deal.

Check out the infomercial below. It is 10 minutes long but does not include the commercial inserts.

Selma Blair was spotted shopping this week in Beverly Hills. I like this preggy glam look...but the brown shoes with the black dress?...um not so much. And, there is an engagement looking ring on the engagement finger so....does this mean the 38 year old Legally Blonde  actress was proposed to by her boyfriend Jason Bleick?  Inquiring minds want to know.

Blair is wearing the Isabella Oliver Maternity Pleated Wrap Dress in caviar black.
