Pediatricians offices have been telling parents not to medicate infants and toddlers under two with over the counter drugs to treat colds and coughs. The reason for this recent change in direction came from a study which showed some cases of death by overdose. This situation has left many parents frazzled and scrambling about how to aide a sick baby or sooth a constant cough. They want to help the babies out but they see no relief in sight.
I do believe I've covered this situation to a certain extent in a past post, but since I had recent success with this homeopathic holistic solution that does not require oral medication
, I thought I'd share. This is how my mom and husband's mom taught us.Step 1: Find a room with no rugs, carpet, stuffed animals, stored blankets and any other product that may house dust and other allergens. If there is no such room, empty the nursery of as much of these items as possible.
Step 2: Pull out your cool mist humidifier (not warm mist), make sure it is cleaned, and add a filter if you have one available, add water and plug it in. The smaller the room, the better as the water will fill in the air quicker and more efficiently in a smaller space. I have a Vick's 1 Gallon brand which is great and will last more than one night even in a small room.
Step 3: Purchase either a Vick's Waterless vaporizer or a Soothing Mist Waterless Vaporizer plugins for Babies. They run about $9.00 and the refills cost about $4-6 for 6 pads. Plug this pad in near where the baby will be sleeping to maximize the impact and effect of the menthol, eucalyptus and mint scented vapors that will be coming from the plugs and waifing through your baby's nasal passages and upper respiratory system.
Step 4: Rub down the baby in essential oil camphor which you can pick up from health food stores or order online from Amazon.com. I got my first vial from the drug store when visiting Trinidad one Christmans. My husband's aunt and mom put soft candle in the oil and rubbed down GG. It worked wonders. They put some on the crown of her head for quick
absorption of this all natural blend of eucalyptus scented oil. Rub some on the baby's chest and give baby a gentle massage with the oil on its back and wherever. The massage will be soothing at the least. Babies LOVE massages just as much as adults. It calms them, comforts them and builds security in them, believe it or not. That security comes from your touch on their skin. If you cannot find this oil nearby or your order has not come in yet from Amazon, you can purchase Vick's baby rub ointment in the alternative and use that as it is gentle to use.Step
5: Dim the light and keep the room closed so the water vapors and scented pads can do their jobs. For a baby that has that hollow, chesty and breathy cough, he probably has Croup , a viral infection that babies and young children often catch defined by that harsh cough. There is also no medication solution for Croup. In those cases, run the shower and keep the door shut for about 5-10 minutes. After a good amount of steam has built up in the bathroom, take the baby inside. Close the door and let the warm mist work as the baby breathes in the heavily concentrated warm mist.
Do these things and I guarantee quieted coughs and happier babies and toddlers every night!
Good luck!!
