5 Winter Must-Haves for Your Winter Pregnancy

These days, there are more and more maternity lines that offer comfortable and chic clothes. Different brands and stores offer options in varying price ranges to accommodate different budgets. When I was pregnant with my first child, I was earning double six figures working at a schi schi uptown law firm, so I went all out and purchased exclusive designer maternity wear from design houses like Liz Lange and the slightly less expensive but still pricey store A Pea in the Pod. With my second, I had gone on to a job in the government with more responsibility but which earned me way less. This meant a drop in lifestyle options and luxury maternity wear fell by the wayside. Instead, I relied on my old stuff, and by that time, old stand bys like GAP and Old Navy started to put their maternity wear on line and eventually in their stores. Around my second pregnancy, I discovered Isabella Oliver, which sells uber comfortable chic wearable clothes that many celebrities are often photographed in, including Angelina Jolie, Marcia Cross, Heidi Klum, Minnie Driver, and Gabrielle Beauvais-Nilon. I purchased a few pieces for a wedding I attended and for my maternity photo session. With that, I found 5 key pieces that I wore and relied on to get me thru the only pregnancy when I was largest during the winter: the last one with GG.

1. The Long Sweater: This is great because many times, you just feel too big to wear a coat and I know I really didn't like stuff stretching or feeling tight over my belly. An open long sweater that is not too chunky and has room for your expanding belly that will grow as your bump grows is ideal. You can throw it on over a T shirt and khakis or a nice dress. Price: $54.50, which is a pretty good deal for the investment. Treat this item well and you could even use it through all trimesters and for subsequent pregnancies.GAP makes this....

2. The Everyday Jeans: Sure people make fun of Mom jeans, but if they could check out the collection of pregnancy jeans that some stores sell, folks would have to be picked up off the floor. Okay, sometimes our hips expand and our butts grow exponentially with each passing month, ( I know mine did), but who says we have to give up shapely fitting jeans just because we're baking a kid or two? Old Navy sells a nice selection of maternity jeans that aren't boxy. In fact, their offerings are one of the more varied of all the affordable lines, I believe.

While I do like the "roll panel" option brands are making now which allow you to roll down the panel off your tummy when you get uncomfortable, I likes Old Navy's Maternity Low-Rise Dark Boot-Cut Jeans the best because of its dark color. You can get aw ay with pairing it with a nice top and wearing it to a less casual event. Also, with the dark bottom, you have more options of top colors you can wear. I prefer the boot cut jeans too because you're more likely to be wearing boots and heavier shoes in the winter anyway. Price: 32.50

3. The Classic White Shirt: Everyone's wardrobe should MUST include the classic white shirt and the pregnant woman's wardrobe is no exception to that rule. A crisp white shirt is great because it can be dressed down and paired with jeans or up and paired with slacks. It can be layered over a camis or worn under a business jacket. I like A Pea in The Pod's tunic style white shirt because of the high collar. At times, you may get hyper-pigmentation on the neck when pregnant (as I did) or your hair grows a lot (as mine did) , the tunic has dual purposes of shielding your neck and it looks great next to longer hair. Also, a tunic is longer and does an additional functional job of hiding the belly panel! Ever since A Pea in the Pod started selling items from its parent company's cheaper store Motherhood Maternity, I've noticed a wider range of pricing options as is apparent in the fact that this Long Sleeve Button Detail Maternity Tunic from A Pea In the Pod retails for $79.00 though it is on sale for half that at just $38.00!!

4. The Work Pants: Japanese Weekend, which is a fav brand/store I discovered during my second pregnancy as well, is known for its forgiving fabrics and trendy pieces. For the corporate woman who really isn't that interested in having to squeeze on some itchy straight-laced slacks, the jersey pants may be the solution for

maximum comfort. I know I lived in my jersey slacks personally because if you select the right one, it can still look polished and professional. They work well with all shapes and sizes, whether you are curvy, have thin legs or shapely ones, the contouring aspect to a well-crafted jersey pants is a sure bet!

Japanese Weekend's luxe jersey maternity wide leg pant is wonderful because it looks like dressy pants, but feels like comfortable yoga pants. And because it's made of jersey ma terial, you can roll them up or down your belly as you feel fit. They are machine washable, so no need to worry about dry cleaning. Price: $65.00

5. The Cocktail Dress: Whether it's the holiday party, a winter wedding or your cousin's Bar Mitvah, you may not escape being pregnant in the winter without having to don a fancy-ish dress at some point. My absolute fave brand for dressy stylish dresses is Isabella Oliver whose post on how to have a chic pregnancy is a very popular past Bellyitch Post. I wore one of this designer's pieces at a winter wedding myself.

I love the shape and silhouette of this dress...

I admit, it may not flatter that many so I think a must have would be the classic wrap style dress...
This one from Isabella Oliver retails for $179.00 and is comparable in price as Liz Lange's wrap dress from its Heritage Collection.

and my up and coming find is Damo Momo, a wonderful, new, organic line of maternity clothing. This new mother and daughter line features very super fine cotton and fabrics, made w
ith the comfort of mommy in mind. The Laguna Beach, California company sent me an infant tee to sample the softness of the product. Amazing!! Look for a giveaway of a product from this line in a review and feature this coming Monday!
