Saturday Follies: What I learned from The Bump TTC Boards

Saturday, October 10, 2009

Just thought, I'd do a round up of various miscellaneous posts that do not necessarily fit in any other categories, but first thought I'd share this:

1. I get random people leaving comments that also link to products and websites and I assume they do so as a quick way to capitalize
Publish Post
on readers of my more popular posts. I hate Spam. There are 4 offenders that piss me off more so than the Nigerian scams: 1. The Internal Revenue Service unreported income spam; 2. The Get a Degree from some online university in New York; 3. The Get a Fancy Watch for 1/2 the price; and the 4. Viagra and Canadian pharmaceutical spam.

So I was a little taken aback when I went over on The Bump TTC boards and left a post inviting the members to enter my give-away for the "Making Babies" contest. Who told me to do that!? I left 5 posts on 5 bulletin boards and 3 out of 5 board members rolled their eyes at the post, called it spam and went off on me for daring to suggest (via my offer to enter the contest) that the 3 month program the author's suggest is/would be their solution to their conception challenges. Whoa mama! Well, I knew going in, that it might NOT be a good idea and boy did I learn my lesson. Most people I know deal with their conception difficulties privately and usually do not lash out when their friends say something insensitive or get pregnant. These boards are a place where they can commensurate, share their stories, suggestions, ideas, treatment options, and other tips. There is a community that grows and develops and like most communities aren't too keen to interlopers coming in and interjecting their posts (especially not spam) in their space.
Still, the response were quite snarky, though understandably so. It's so hard in this world of PC to not do or say something that may offend someone going through difficult thing such as TTC for over a year so for that I sooo regret that. Lesson learned. I'll just stick to posting it on The Big List of Giveaways.
